“Swab” – the application of cotton swabs (q-tips) to the inside of your cheek for several seconds, which is then sent to a testing lab to determine whether your HLA (Human Leukocyte Antigen) matches someone in need of a donor.
* These numbers are only a portion of what our S4S friends have done as we can only track people who say they are donating within the S4S donor circle to GOL and DKMS. BTM doesn’t track our numbers.*
Shira, loving wife and mother of three. Shira was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma on New Year’s Eve 2010. So many with diseases like Shira’s require a stem cell transplant and are unable to find a donor to help save their lives. Shira found her hero in 2013. You could be a hero too. Get swabbed and find out!
“Smiles4Shira has opened me up to a whole new world I never expected to know about. I have learned so much about how to save lives just by a quick swab to the cheek! I have never been more educated!”
“If you are fortunate to donate your bone marrow or your stem cells to save a life it is a selfless act that will always be a part of your life”
“I not only realized the power of social media for doing good, but also the power of the human spirit in an effort to find a loved one to many but a stranger to some, a match that could ultimately save her life."
“It’s been a gift and a privilege to be a small part of this effort to literally save lives and promote awareness of blood cancer and the registry”
